Autumn leaves are falling before I’ve had a chance to enjoy their colors. I hope you pause to enjoy this wonderful city and season.
We had a huge success at our 23rd Annual Rocking Chair Races (& Fall Fest & Auction) on October 7th - raising almost $17,000. The Board worked diligently preparing for this big event— making the day exciting, eventful, and so much fun. (And nearly every Board Member had a rocking chair team!) We saw friends, old and new, and already look forward to next year! My personal thanks to everyone on the Board, along with Staff who helped with event coordination, Melissa Hughes who co-chaired the Auction, Ed Ringness who set up the rocking chairs, and all the other great volunteers who made the day a true celebration.
You will hear from us before year-end with our holiday appeal, as we ask for your generosity in support of WCSC. If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet in 2006, here is your opportunity! Your help & commitment keep the Center thriving and a good place to be. Thank you!
Live Well & Laugh Often! Lisa Kane, Board President
It is never easy to announce price increases, but we do so with confidence that our decision to do so is well-reasoned and necessary. Effective for 2007, annual membership dues will increase to $30 (adults 50 years & older) and $40 (community members under 50 years). Also effective 2007, lifetime membership categories will be discontinued — though current lifetime memberships will still be honored.
Membership cost and categories were last reviewed and changed in 2002. Even last year, it was clear that such a review was overdue. But it was important to do this carefully and with full information. Since June, Staff, the Program Advisory Council, and the Board have considered all sides of this issue. This concluded in a decision to make the changes described above. We have strived to keep dues fair, affordable, and in line with rates at similar near-by senior centers. In our review, it was clear that WCSC is well below what other centers charge for similar memberships. For example, one charges $30 - $99 for individual annual membership; another charges $50 for membership with voting privileges.
Our programs are strong and valuable, with concrete cost advantages to members, and member only events. Savings of participating in just one class at member rates and one member-only event would pay for over 50% of an annual membership. Look for additional information about this change at the Center. 2007 Membership application forms will be available mid-November and will be mailed with the next newsletter. And let us know your questions and concerns.
